SoftLayer, Dedicated Server Web Hosting Firm, Opens New Data Center

Dallas, Texas - (The Hosting News) - March 11, 2008 - On-demand, dedicated web hosting solutions firm, SoftLayer, has opened a a second datacenter facility in Dallas, as well as investing over $5 million, in the completion of an upgrade of its core networking infrastructure.

The new facility features 220 new racks, more than doubling SoftLayer’s server capacity in Dallas. It has its own multiple power feeds supported by independent UPS systems and generators for failover, while leveraging the same network operations (NOC) as the existing SoftLayer facility.

Lance Crosby, CEO of SoftLayer noted, ”The new datacenter resides within the same building as our current facility, but it is completely redundant from all other risk variables, including power, bandwidth, and cooling. This allows us to deliver an additional level of failover and disaster recovery for customers seeking redundant Dallas facilities.”

As part of this expansion, a major core network backbone upgrade was completed to better serve all customers using the Dallas facilities. The upgrade included: Addition of three new Cisco 7600-S routers utilizing the latest RSP-720 Supervisor Engines; Upgrade of all existing 6500-E switches utilizing the latest Sup720-3CXL Supervisor Engines; DDOS and IDS protection with multiple Cisco Guard and Tipping Point installations; Continued deployment of 40g to the rack (20g public and 20g private) utilizing Cisco 3560-E rack switches.

This upgrade is anticipated to significantly improve performance for all SoftLayer customers as the new Cisco equipment provides increased CPU speed, more memory, and far greater routing capacity than the previous generation of equipment. SoftLayer continues pushing innovation by deploying the latest technologies and increasing its investment in retrofitting the existing environment.

Mr. Crosby continued, ”SoftLayer has a mandate to provide continuous innovation to its customers and be the first to market with products and services that enable our model of on-demand IT.”

Located in the INFOMART in Dallas, Texas, SoftLayer was formed in June 2005 by a team of industry executives seeking to deliver low cost next generation on-demand hosting services for the small to medium enterprise (SME). Utilizing proprietary software, coupled with the industry’s first network-within-a-network topology, the company delivers the power and control to securely manage IT environments while providing comprehensive scalability.

Web Hosting Company, Pro Net Hosting, Acquires Homepage Universe

Glendale, California - (The Hosting News) - March 11, 2008 - Pro Net Hosting, web hosting service provider, has acquired Homepage Universe, having migrated its customer services and marketing to the Homepage portal, which it will use going forward for all of its customers.

Gary Aslanyan, President at Pro Net noted, ”We purchased Homepage Universe for two reasons. First, we really liked the user experience they provided — it’s clean and simple, with no pitfalls or hidden conditions. It has the kind of appeal a site like GoDaddy has, but is even easier to use. Customers know exactly what they are getting and what they have to do to get it. But our main reason for the purchase was to grow our business without the usual costs and risks of trying to grow through aggressive marketing. Buying Homepage Universe has doubled our size — we now provide shared and dedicated hosting for over 100,000 domains.”

Mr. Aslanyan says the key to making the purchase work is maintaining the excellent customer experience of Homepage, while adding the extensive technical knowhow and support that Pro Net is known for.

Pro Net/Homepage now offers a wide range of hosting options suitable for individuals, businesses of all sizes, and resellers. Hosting is provided with a choice of Windows or Linux servers, something few other hosting companies offer. They also provide users with a Plesk control panel to manage their domains, free use of SiteBuilder with over 500 free web templates, plus unlimited up and down bandwidth.

Mr. Aslanyan added, ”This acquisition gives us a leading-edge presence that lets us compete with the big boys in hosting.”

Dedicated Server, Colocation Web Hosting Provider, LeaseWeb, Debuts Green Promo

Amsterdam, The Netherlands - (The Hosting News) - March 10, 2008 - International business hosting services firm, LeaseWeb, is offering extensive green improvements, for its customers currently using Windows Server 2003, having configured over 2,000 dedicated servers at its EvoSwitch facility.

Dedicated Servers are the most versatile and powerful solution for heavy-duty hosting tasks. Therefore, the company has prepared its dedicated servers for hosting customers that want to take advantage of the new operating system as soon as it is available.

Ruud Mous, Sales Director for LeaseWeb noted, ”During the trial period, we gained important experiences using the Windows Server 2008. We were able to study the new operating system for weeks, with technical support from Microsoft for our people. Windows Server 2008 is a better hosting platform than Windows Server 2003, in particular due to the improvements in deployment and imaging management, but also as a result of the substantially higher number of sites per server and the improved performance of PHP.”

The Windows Server 2008 Early Bird promotion is possible due to LeaseWeb’s Microsoft Gold Partnership and its participation in the Microsoft Rapid Deployment Program (RDP) for Windows Server 2008. Through the RDP, Microsoft has given a select number of partners the opportunity to test Windows Server 2008 at an early stage - even before the product is released to market - with technical support from Microsoft. LeaseWeb’s Early Bird promotion package includes a Dedicated Server, bandwidth, and a pre-installed Windows Server 2008 with prices starting at 69 pounds per month. The Early Bird servers are hosted in LeaseWeb’s extensive hosting network.

LeaseWeb runs 500 racks in the climate-neutral data center EvoSwitch, the only greendata center in the Netherlands . The Windows 2008 servers are also located in this green data center. Those hosting customers who are interested can also use The Green Fan label (www.thegreenfan.com), which enables them, in their marketing communications, to show their customers that they make a positive contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

Internet Information Services 7 is an important feature in Windows Server 2008. Mr. Mous added, ”IIS7 allows us to host as many as 5,000 websites per server. IIS 6, on the other hand, was in many cases only able to handle 1,500 websites. This represents a huge improvement in efficiency within our own organization, but also for customers with a Dedicated Server.”

LeaseWeb also gives positive reviews for Powershell and Server Core. Mr. Mous continued, ”Windows administrators may have to get used to the Powershell, but it is the future for Windows and other Microsoft products. Powershell is extremely powerful and the scripting features far exceed VBScript. Now everything can be organized and scripted from the command prompt. It can be used with IIS, Exchange 2007 and SQL 2008.”

Another important innovation in Windows Server 2008 is the addition of Hyper-V, the final version of which is expected later this year. Mr. Mous concluded, ”We have also been offered the opportunity, via the Hyper-V Microsoft Rapid Deployment Program, to test Hyper-V at an early stage - and our first experiences are extremely positive. Hyper-V turns out to be an extremely powerful virtualization software. The LeaseWeb product portfolio now includes several virtualization techniques, to which Hyper-V will be added in the near future.”

LeaseWeb is an international supplier of hosting products and services that specializes in both Microsoft and Linux, and focuses primarily on the professional market. The company is among the top 30 hosting providers in the world and provides services such as web hosting, dedicated hosting, colocated hosting, VPS and streaming, as well as technical support. LeaseWeb owns a first-class Cisco-powered network offering a bandwidth of over 160 Gbps, which extends across five data centers in the Amsterdam region via the major telecom carriers. LeaseWeb is also present on internet exchanges in Amsterdam , Brussels , London , Frankfurt , New York , Vienna , Stockholm, Warsaw, Zurich , Prague and Madrid. Founded in 1997, hosting provider LeaseWeb now manages 11,000 servers. Its customers include Starbucks, Hyves, Telegraaf Media Groep, Koninklijke Joh. Ensched, PricewaterhouseCoopers, AVRO, Direct Wonen, and Univ.
